And we have zero room for innovation, creativity, or improvement without change. And those who make change happen have a much better opportunity to control the change for their own good.
What really drives change? What actually impacts your life-changing decisions?
Maybe things that happen that seem out of our control? Really, it all boils down to this formula.
According to this formula, the power of dissatisfaction with the status quo, multiplied with the forces of a compelling vision, and added with the initial steps should be greater than the resistance to change.
The first two variables drive the change, pushing people to change with discontent and a clear path to leave that state.
People with dissatisfaction merely want something better or different. They feel that the status quo doesn’t serve their best interests. As a result, they wrestle with this emotion.
People initially assume that they have no way out when solely operating in a state of dissatisfaction. And change will not happen only with dissatisfaction driving it. Being unhappy provides no direction. They will usually ask the question, “what next?” And they'll continue to ask this question until they start to build the...
At its most basic level, a vision outlines where you want to go. The best vision begins as an idea that arises out of dissatisfaction. You start to consider the benefits and drawbacks, then shape the vision with a well-thought-out plan.
As a result, a vision for change shows you what your life would look like when you implement the essential changes. Truly compelling visions also outline what you’ll accomplish and what possibilities you’ll seize. Your vision should always incorporate the rationale for the shift.
A dream of a better future isn’t enough. At this point in the equation, you are merely fantasizing. However, knowing the first step will certainly help you start making the change happen.
Clear priorities, goals, objectives, a portfolio of projects, and a communication strategy should drive you to finally dive in.
And to be honest, the more closely your vision aligns with reality and your current situation, the more easily you can take that first step. Even if you don’t know every turn you’ll make, take comfort in the fact that most people who’ve made a great change didn’t know either.
Despite the fact that change is unavoidable, few enjoy it. People like to be comfortable, using a system that has been proven time and time again.
Newer technology, information, and competition, on the other hand, slows down potential change. If ignored, this resistance can lead to a more unhappiness and, in the worst-case scenario, a complete collapse of a successful transition.
To truly make a great change happen, all three variables on the left must be higher than this resistance.
